    A couple comments. Ultrarunning was extremely popular during the 19th century in both England and America as races, not just survival or for communications. More the 500 six-day races were held in the late 1800s, and the runners were very fast. The 100-mile world record was 13:57:00 The sport did not start in the modern era and certainly not in 1974. Also, Western States began in 1977, not 1974. More than 50 other ultras of up to 100 miles existed in the 20th century worldwide before Western States.
